Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Q & A

How can I tell if I have a sexually-transmitted disease (STD)?

The best way to determine if you have an STD is to be screened by your doctor. Screening is especially important because many STDs don't cause symptoms until more advanced stages when they can be more difficult to treat or manage. Having an undiagnosed STD also means you're much more likely to spread the infection to someone else without even knowing it.

How are STDs treated?

Today, many STDs can be treated with antibiotics or other medications or approaches, but there are some that cannot be cured. Those diseases, like herpes, HIV and some types of HPV, must be managed instead. Being tested as early as possible is critical to ensuring your symptoms can be managed effectively and to prevent transmission to others. Once your STD has been diagnosed, Dr. Bardowell will work with you to understand all of your treatment options, including the use of in-office procedures to remove warts and medications to help keep other symptoms and side effects under control.

If I have unprotected sex, how soon can I be tested for an STD?

Most diseases take several weeks to develop to the point where they can be measured by blood tests or other testing methods. If you've had risky sex, talk to Dr. Bardowell about how soon you can be tested as well as any symptoms you should be watching out for and what you should do to prevent passing a possible infection to someone else.

How often do I need to be tested for STDs?

Annual screenings are recommended for people who are sexually active. Those who engage in risky sexual behavior, such as having multiple partners or unprotected sex should be tested as often as every three to six months.
