What happens during a prenatal office visit?

You prenatal office visit is an important part of helping ensure you and your baby stay healthy during pregnancy, During the visit, you'll be weighed and your belly may be measured to determine the size of your baby. Simple urine tests and blood work may be performed to monitor for issues that could affect you or your baby, such as gestational diabetes. Your blood pressure will also be monitored. Depending on how far along you are, you may have an ultrasound or prenatal testing to check for the presence of genetic disorders or developmental issues or to monitor other conditions if you have a high-risk pregnancy. Plus, you'll have a chance to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have.

What should I be doing to stay healthy during pregnancy?

Staying healthy means eating a healthy diet, quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol, going to all your prenatal exams, staying active and getting plenty of rest. Never take any medicine or supplements without discussing them with your doctor first.

Is it normal to have spotting while pregnant?

Sometimes, a little spotting can be normal; however, it's always a good idea to call Dr. Bardowell's office if you have spotting or any other unusual symptoms to see if an office visit is in order.

When can I find out my baby's gender?

The gender of your baby may be able to be determined during your mid-pregnancy ultrasound at 16 to 20 weeks.

How often will I need to have an ultrasound?

An ultrasound may be ordered at about six to 10 weeks to determine your due date and at 16 to 20 weeks to check on the baby's development. Additional ultrasounds may be performed as part of prenatal testing or if you have a high-risk pregnancy.
