Fertility & Infertility Q & A

If I can't get pregnant, does that mean I'm infertile?

No, infertility is defined as not being able to become pregnant after trying to conceive for 12 or more consecutive months, or six consecutive months if you're over 35 years of age. That's because sometimes ovulation cycles can become a little disrupted by illness, chronic stress or other issues, but in a cycle or two, those issues resolve on their own. If you've been trying every month for the past year (or six months if you're over 35) and have been unsuccessful, you should have a fertility evaluation performed.

What are the most common causes of infertility?

In women, the most common causes include:

  • medical conditions that affect ovulation, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • uterine adhesions (scars), polyps or fibroids

  • endometriosis, which develops when uterine tissue grows elsewhere in the body

  • defects in the uterine lining, uterus or cervix that prevent sperm from reaching the eggs or keep the egg from being implanted

  • older age

For men, infertility usually arises from problems with the structure, motion or concentration of sperm. Some medical treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can also cause infertility, as can genetic issues.

How will Dr. Bardowell determine if I'm infertile?

Dr. Bardowell will conduct a thorough exam as well as review your medical history to determine possible causes. Blood work, lab work, sperm analysis, internal exams and diagnostic imaging like ultrasound can also help pinpoint causes of infertility. The type of testing and evaluation Dr. Bardowell uses will depend on your exam and health history as well as your partner's health history.

What infertility treatments are available?

For women, many treatments use medication to promote ovulation or help shrink fibroids. Surgery may be needed to correct some issues, while some couples may benefit from techniques like in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).
