Miljenko Jergović was born in the small Bosnian town of Kotor Varoš, which is now in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was raised in Sarajevo and studied at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, where he graduated in 1991. He had a very narrow base for his education and was initially very poor, not just in terms of financial means but also in terms of cultural ones. He was tried, convicted and imprisoned by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 2009. Miljenko was brought up in a village, which is not one of the most renowned in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was very proud of the fact that she never accepted a single piece of money in her life and that she had a library of her own which was full of books and which she gave to her nephew. In such a way he was brought up. He learned to read, write and express his thoughts in the Bosnian language, although he did not learn English. In the same village, he grew up
